Yealink W53H/P End of Life Announcement

The Yealink W53P/H DECT Handset is now End of Life. Due to difficulties in sourcing these products, they will only be available while stocks last. To view our current stock levels, please log in to ProSys.

Deployed devices will continue to work alongside the W70B Base station and will continue to be supported in line with our Yealink lifetime warranty. The warranty on these items will expire 1 year from 30/09/2022 or 2 years from the date of purchase, whichever is longest.

Introducing the replacement

Replacing the W53P/H is the W73P/H. Building on the greatness of the W53H, the W73H adds an extended battery life of up to 35 hours of talk time, additional SIP accounts (up to 10), and improved flexible noise reduction, all for the same price as the W53H.

What’s more, the W73H is compatible with the W70B base station and can be ordered as part of a bundle (W73P) or separate additional handsets with (W73H).

Snom D862 & D865 – Information you need to know!

This information may change in the future and has been provided from reviewing firmware version 10.1.141.11 on the D862 & D865

Quick fire points

  • Provisioning uses XML formatting for the D862 & D865, they no longer support the ‘cfg’ provisioning format
  • Make sure you secure the old and new web user interfaces with a username and password
  • Set an admin password to restrict the phone access to user settings (setup via old WUI)
  • Familiarise yourself on how to access the old web user interface
  • Familiarise yourself with provisioning parameters to secure your devices

XML Based provisioning

The D862 & D865 no longer support cfg/flat file provisioning parameters, they will only provision via XML based formatting – https://service.snom.com/display/wiki/Desk+Phone+Configuration+Files

Prefer to use the old-style web user interface?

It is still possible to access the old-style web user interface of the D862 and D865 by navigating to the IP address of your phone with “http” and port “3112”:

Securing the old-style interface

Once you have accessed the old-style web user interface, it will display security advice where you can setup a HTTP user, HTTP Password and an administrator password to secure your device. If you accidentally navigate away from this page, you can go to ‘Advanced > QoS/Security’ and configure these settings from there:

How to login to the new web user interface and secure it.

You’ve received your new Snom phone, you’ve plugged it into the network, it has obtained its IP address. You enter this into your web browser and you are presented with this login page. There’s no default username or passwords here so go ahead and click the ‘Authenticate’ button to login.

Once logged in, you will see some warnings saying a password has not been set for the ‘admin’ and ‘user’ account. To configure these, go to ‘Security > Advanced’ and populate the fields below and click ‘Apply’.

New provisioning parameters for a new interface

Due to the Snom D862 and D865 having a new web user interface to manage the devices, there are also new provisioning parameters to secure them.

Settings for new WUI:

Admin Account uses:
webserver_admin_name
webserver_admin_password

User Account uses:
webserver_user_name
webserver_user_password 

If you provision your own Snom devices, do not forget to still apply these parameters below for the old web user interface and admin (phone) password:

How to restrict admin access from users

Turning off admin mode will restrict unauthorised access to admin settings such as performing a factory reset, changing SIP credentials etc.

Web user interface method

To turn admin mode ‘off’ via the web user interface go to ‘Advanced > QoS/Security’ and set “Administrator mode” to ‘off’ and click ‘save’. – Default pin is ‘0000’ but ensure this is changed to secure your phone even further.

Phone user interface method

You can turn ‘admin’ mode off on the phone user interface by accessing the following:

‘Menu > System > Administrator Access = Off > Save’

UPS Devices & How they can Help You Prepare for the PSTN Switch Off

The 2025 PSTN switch off poses a number of opportunities and challenges for the Channel. Read on to discover our Technical Solutions Director, Muhammad Bajwa’s thoughts on how our new range of UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can help you prepare for the big switch off.

In my last blog post, I covered some benefits of introducing VoIP and Ofcom’s regulations around the PSTN switch off and their expectations from Service providers. Having just launched a new range of UPS devices, I will now cover how we can help you to fulfil the regulatory requirements and provide backup power to devices on site.

Requirements

Having spoken to a number of partners about their requirements, some were quite basic, such as; the UPS needs to be reliable but economical, it should be maintenance free but must have a replaceable battery. The device should have 3 pin UK plugs to connect the power supply straight into it and ideally should allow some basic troubleshooting to check the battery status etc.

Our Solution

I have looked at a couple of brands but decided to go for Blue Walker Line Interactive UPS range as our go to product for the Channel. We have initially chosen three products from the range based on how much backup battery power it will provide to a router and a phone/ATA.

Testing

During my lab testing, the VI 650 SB lasted just over an hour, the VI 600 STL just over 2 hours and the VI 2200 STL lasted around 4 hours. The test devices in my lab were a DrayTek 2862Ln and a Yealink T57W with maximum load being around 25W on the UPS. Being Line interactive, the transfer rate was very quick (around 4ms) which means I did not notice any loss of power and my devices kept operating normally when the UPS was disconnected from the mains power.

Battery Life

An important question I have already been asked a few times is how long the battery will last on these devices. To be honest, this really does depend on a few factors, namely:

  • The use case
  • Environmental factors
  • How well the device has been maintained

The typical life span of a UPS is around 3-5 years from the production date. PowerWalker offer a 2-year warranty on their products which covers both hardware and the battery. Ofcom expects the providers of the solution to have a maintenance plan in place to make sure the products can continue to work on an ongoing basis. That said, the end customer will have to take some responsibility for this. In this instance, it is recommended that the documentation provided clearly outlines what is required by the end user.
