End of an era for the Snom 300

Today we have shipped our last ever Snom 300!

We first shipped the Snom 300 in the summer of 2006, which makes it our longest running IP phone. The Snom 300 has been extremely popular, over its lifetime we have supplied over 32,000 models to the channel.

We announced the end of life notice back in February this year but managed to secure a large stock quantity to ensure we could continue to supply the popular model for as long as possible.

The Snom 300 will now be replaced by the new D3 series of phones which includes the D305 and D315. These have a similar design to the Snom 300, but with a BLF indicator and an improved, larger display. The Snom D315 also includes Gigabit pass-through and a USB port which allows connection of the new D3 expansion console.

Our company accountant is still using their Snom 300, which has been going strong for over 10 years! We’d love to hear about your Snom 300 stories, do you have any that are still standing the test of time?

Snom Phone Security

We remind all snom phone customers about the security advice at http://wiki.snom.com/FAQ/How_do_I_secure_my_phone

In particular the advice to set an admin mode password on the phone. The web interface of the phone can be accessed using the admin mode password. The default of `0000` is not secure.

A http password alone is not enough to protect the web interface of the phone.

If an attacker can access the web interface of your phone, they can dial a call, which might result in fraudulent calls being made.

Connecting a V2.0 Expansion Module to a D315 or D305 phone:

If you have an Expansion Module V2.0 (discontinued product), you can use it with the D315 and D305 phones by connecting it to the phone‘s EXT connector , but please note and make sure to heed the following warning:

Warning: Attach the module to the phone with one screw only, using the top hole. Using a screw in the
bottom hole will damage the phone‘s PCB!    screenshot-from-2016-11-07-134214

Snom models with self-labelling keys

models with self-labelling displayJoining the D3 and D7 series, Snom have introduced the new D345 and D745 IP Desk phones. These models both feature a second screen with self-labelling programmable function keys. This paperless design gives a smart look and increased flexibility to customise your programmable keys as and when you require, without having to manually update paper labels.

Snom D710/D715 – DND Display Differences

For Snom phone models 710/715, there is a slight display difference when using the DND mode on phones using the 8.7.5.35 firmware. With previous versions of firmware, when DND was active, a banner would be displayed across the screen; with 8.7.5.35 and newer versions, this is not the case. Instead, it just displays a small message.

In order to fix this problem:
1. Copy all of the following URL:

PhoneHasTextMessages PhoneProvisioningFailed

2. Replace “phoneIPaddress” with that of the phone you are using.

3. Enter into your web browser and it should fix the problem. The DND message should now look like the one below.

Snom 320 End of Life Notice

We have received notice from Snom that the Snom 320 will be going ‘end of life’. From our current stock levels, we predict that our stock will last until mid August 2016. Please note; this is only a prediction and our ability to supply this model is ultimately dependent upon the orders we receive. Once our stock has run out we will be unable to replenish it.

Up to date stock availability can be seen on ProSys.

Strangest bug I’ve ever discovered

I have just accidentally discovered a very strange bug (or feature?) on a snom phone.

It affects 8.7.5.35 firmware and possibly others.  When tested on firmware 8.7.5.13 this doesn’t occur.

If you set up a SIP account, any SIP account (doesn’t even have to be a real working one) and the SIP password contains the word “monkey”, you get the following error message and the account will not work:

I have informed Snom about this.  I’ve never had a customer reporting this problem, it is just funny.

ProSys firmware provisioning

It has always been possible to manage firmware upgrades using our online phone management portal, ProSys. Support staff can do this very quickly by selecting from a drop-down box of available firmware on the portal.

What happens if you want a newer firmware, or just one which isn’t listed in the drop-down (yet!)?

Well, fortunately, it is possible to provide a custom setting in most cases to allow you to select the firmware you wish to provision to a device.

Proceed with caution…

You can use the “Quick entry” to add configuration settings to an individual device.
This allows you to add (key, value) pairs to the provisioning settings, giving you the power to provision firmware directly.

Snom Endpoints Certified for FreePBX

After successful completion of functionality and usability testing, the entire range of Snom IP telephones has been certified for full interoperability with the FreePBX platform. This certification means the FreePBX Project engineering and development teams have tested Snom endpoints for functionality and usability within the FreePBX platform and EndPoint Manager.

Frederic Dickey, Sangoma Technologies VP of Marketing, stated: “FreePBX is all about freedom of choice for business communications systems. The addition of Snom’s phones to the list of supported endpoints in the EndPoint Manager module confirms our approach to the market. EndPoint Manager enables easy provisioning and management of supported endpoints directly from within the FreePBX Administrative GUI, saving a great deal of time in the implementation of systems.”

About FreePBX
FreePBX is an open source Asterisk® based PBX which can be managed and configured via a web browser. FreePBX can be installed manually or as part of the pre-configured Sangoma FreePBX Appliances that includes the system OS.
