Yealink Provisioning: Common file mapping

This is perhaps more of a reminder to me for future reference, however, it may be useful for others too!

When a Yealink phone provisions, it requests a common provisioning file and a MAC specific one. The common one is referred to as such because each model requests a file which is unique to it.

Here are the Yealink models alongside the requested common files:

ProSys firmware provisioning

It has always been possible to manage firmware upgrades using our online phone management portal, ProSys. Support staff can do this very quickly by selecting from a drop-down box of available firmware on the portal.

What happens if you want a newer firmware, or just one which isn’t listed in the drop-down (yet!)?

Well, fortunately, it is possible to provide a custom setting in most cases to allow you to select the firmware you wish to provision to a device.

Proceed with caution…

You can use the “Quick entry” to add configuration settings to an individual device.
This allows you to add (key, value) pairs to the provisioning settings, giving you the power to provision firmware directly.

Yealink “ghost” phone calls

Occasionally we get support calls from people reporting “ghost” calls on a Yealink phone.

Fortunately the problem is easier to fix than calling the Ghostbusters in.

It’s caused by potential hackers trying to gain access to public SIP phone systems by scanning IP addresses for anything that responds to SIP calls. Usually using a tool called sipvicious.

Whilst they can’t really do anything bad with your Yealink phone, these calls are a nuisance.

To stop them, make sure you are on a fairly recent firmware version. v73 from www.yealink.co.uk or newer is recommended.

Then change two settings in the web interface:

    • Allow Direct IP Call – this means the phone will respond to calls coming in to it from any IP address, to any number. Sometimes used for internal intercom systems or basic phone testing without using a PBX. Set it to disabled. This setting is found in the “Features” setting tab, “General Information” page.

    • Accept SIP Trust Server Only – this is whether the phone accepts calls to the correct phone number but from a different place than it is Registered to. Sometimes needed for certain SIP providers but you want to set this to enabled wherever possible so the phone only accepts calls from your service provider. This setting is found either in the “Features” tab, “General Information” page or the “Account” tab depending on the phone model or firmware version.

On v80 firmware these are both in the same place:

Yealink T21E2 Updated Model

We recently announced a change to the Yealink T19PN as these have been updated to the T19PN E2. The same has now happened for the T21PN these are now T21PN E2.

We’ve tested the new Yealink T21E2 and provisions OK and is able to make calls. The chipset in the phone has changed but functionality-wise, it’s the same as the T21P.

There are a couple of changes you need to be aware of though:

  • It has it’s own firmware version and you cannot downgrade it to older versions (this will be a problem for ITSPs who have approved an older firmware on their platform).
  • It says “T21 E2” on the front of it.
  • It reports itself as a different model number when provisioning (which could cause problems for people who have implemented their own provisioning systems).
